Text Box: Sunday Scripture
If we truly desire to have everlasting life in heaven, we need to serve God with devotion, love, patience and zeal. What a contrast between the approach of our first reading, where the complacent are condemned, and our second reading, where Timothy is encouraged to be a man of God! The message is similar, though. We are challenged to live our lives with the future in mind. For us, that means a God-centered life. For our complacency, let us ask forgiveness.
Today's first reading is a warning against complacency and idleness. The second reading calls Timothy to actively pursue righteousness. In the Gospel, Jesus uses a parable of a rich man and a beggar, Lazarus, to show that we are to live, not only for ourselves, but in service to others. We will be judged on how well we assisted those in need.
