Catholic Men in the World - Standing with St. Joseph. Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light

We are told, by the revelation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that God is "Father." He is, in fact, "Our Father." Created in the image and likeness of God, we men, in particular, are also called to be 'fathers,' all of us spiritually, and many of us biologically. How can we be fathers, how can we be Catholic men, in a world that often seems to reject fatherhood?

The Second Vatican Council tells us that "The apostolate in the social milieu, that is, the effort to infuse a Christian spirit into the mentality, customs, laws, and structures of the community in which one lives, is so much the duty and responsibility of the laity that it can never be performed properly by others." (Apostolicam Actuositatem, 13) We are called by God to "contribute to the sanctification of the world, as from within like leaven." (Christifideles Laici, 15).

This conference is intended to give each of us new insights as to how to best live out our vocation as Catholic men. It will inform and inspire, encourage and challenge, each of us to be better men, and to restore a deep dimension of fatherhood to a society that so desperately needs it.

As Catholic men, called to be fathers, we place ourselves under the loving patronage of St. Joseph. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY - OCTOBER 26
On Sunday, Oct. 26, Catholic parishes throughout the United States will show support for their priests with prayer, celebration and dialogue.
The last Sunday of October is designated annually as Priesthood Sunday (also known as World Priest Day coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International.
Priesthood Sunday was established by the National Federation of Priests’ Councils in 2003 to provide a way for Catholic communities to express appreciation for devoted priests who serve them so faithfully. Such a celebration is increasingly relevant in light of the declining number of priests in the United States. Only about 4,000 of the 19,000 parishes in this country currently have more than one priest. Many priests serve two or more parishes by themselves. Clearly, there is a great need for a show of love and support for the priesthood.

ALL SAINTS & ALL SOULS (Nov. 1st & 2nd)
The Feast of All Saints is one of the greatest of all the feasts because it celebrates what could have been impossible. The cross is a tree that bears fruit. This is the feast of its harvest. The celebrations of the mysteries in the life of Our Lord are glorious and there is no detracting from them. But He was God on earth. Aside from all the lofty things to be said about the saints and to the saints on this day, we want our children to understand in the marrow of their bones what the principal idea is: "We are so glad for you. Now pray, so we'll be there too!" And they must add to this and to every feast an endless: "Thank you, Lord Jesus, for making it possible." Celebrating all its patrons this day, the families can plan a procession to the dinner table which will show them off splendidly. You can use costumes of Saints to celebrate dinner in that way. The Holy Masses on that day in our church will be in the
