Text Box: OCTOBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY The month of October is dedicated to Mary under the name of the Most Holy Rosary; October 7 is celebrated as the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. In the 15th & 16th centuries, there were extensive promotions of devotion to the Rosary. On Oct. 7, 1571, Christians won an important naval battle against the Moslem Turks at Lepanto (near Greece). The credit for the victory was thought to be the rosary. Pius V ordered that the annual anniversary of this victory be celebrated with a Marian feast of Our Lady of Victory. In 1573, Holy Father Gregory XIII permitted churches to celebrate a feast of the Holy Rosary. After another victory against the Moslem Turks in 1716, Clement XI extended the feast to the universal church. During the month of October we will pray the rosary every day after 8:00am & 6:00pm Holy Mass followed by Benediction. Please come and invite others to participate in this beautiful devotion. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CHILDREN Children of the First Holy Communion Class will receive their Rosary today on Sunday, October 12, 2008 during the 10.30am Holy Mass. It is their “first step” in preparation to receive two Holy Sacraments: Confession and Holy Communion. Text Box: Sunday Scripture Jesus invites us to his Father’s banquet table. When we receive an invitation to a banquet we know that we are valued in the eyes of others. Yet, we are free to accept or decline the invitation. The same is true with God’s invitation to the eternal banquet in heaven. We have been invited. How will we respond? The images of a lavish feast, the destruction of death and the end of all sadness are used by Isaiah to describe God’s saving power. Paul credits his ability to live in abundance, as well as in adversity, to Jesus, his source of strength. Today’s Gospel employs the wedding banquet as a metaphor for the Kingdom of God, to which all are invited.
