Text Box: The training of the Will
By Msgr. Tanquerey
The will is in man the governing faculty. Being free, the will imparts its freedom, not only to the acts it performs itself, but to those acts it bids the other faculties perform; it gives them their merit or their demerit. The discipline of the will means the discipline of the entire man, and a well-disciplined will is one that is strong enough to govern the lower faculties and docile enough to submit itself to God. In order to effect the right education of the will, we must render it supple enough to obey God in all things and strong enough to control the body and sensitive appetites. To attain this end, obstacles must be removed and positive means employed.

Text Box: Our Mother of Perpetual Help
The icon (in our church, you can find a copy in the Blessed Virgin Chapel) depicts the Blessed Virgin wearing a dress of dark red with blue mantle and veil. On the left is the archangel Michael, on the right is the archangel Gabriel, both carrying the instruments of the Passion of our Lord (lance, sponge, cross and nails). The Christ-child has been alarmed by a pre-sentiment of his Passion, and has run to his mother for comfort. The facial expression of the Virgin Mary is solemn and is looking directly at the viewer instead of her son. Jesus is portrayed clinging to his mother with a dangling sandal. Our Lady of Perpetual Help is therefore Jesus’ and our mother - “a mother ever ready to help in all our miseries”, since she makes the graces available which were merited through her son’s suffering.
