August 24 –  St. Bartholomew – The Apostle and Martyr is identified perhaps with Nathaniel, “in whom there is no guile” He preached the Gospel in India and Armenia where he was flayed alive
August 25 – St. Louis IX of France – model ruler and father of 11 children; Franciscan tertiary who cared especially for lepers; built Sainte Chapelle in Paris as a reliquary for the crown of thorns; while on his second crusade, died of the plague near Tunis in 1270. Patron of masons and sculptors. The same day St. Joseph Calasanz – from Aragon; founded (1617 Clerics Regular of Religious Schools “Piarists”), today numbering some 1,450 religious; dedicated to helping poor children; faced many trials and calumnies for his work, including the temporary suppression of his Institute; patron of all Christian schools dedicated to assisting the poor.
August 28 – St. Augustine –Bishop & doctor of the Church – born in Tagaste, north Africa; he received baptism at age 3 from St.Ambrose.  After a dissolute life, repented and  elected bishop of Hippo; combated Manichees, the Donatist, and Pelagius; most noted for his Confession and City of God; over 500 homilies are extant; considered a funder of monastic life in the West, his Rule (whose mantra for community life is “anima una et cor unum ad Deum” is observed by over 100 religious communities today, including the Augustinian Canons Regular, Friars, and Sisters; Dominicans, Norbertines, Trinitarians, Ursulines, and the Visitation Order; one of the four great doctors of the Latin Church; called “Doctor of Grace.” 
August 29  - The Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist – In addition to the feast of the nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24), the Church, since the fourth century, commemorates the martyrdom of Christ's precursor. According to the Roman Martyrology, this day marks "the second finding of his most venerable head." The body of the saint was buried in Samaria. In the year 362 pagans desecrated the grave and burned his remains. Only a small portion of his relics were able to be saved by monks and sent to St. Athanasius at Alexandria.
