Text Box: Sunday Scripture

Baptism defines us as Christians. Baptism was important in the ministry of Jesus. At its beginning, Jesus was baptized by John. Here God revealed Jesus as his Son and the Spirit descended upon him. At its conclusion, Jesus commanded the Apostles to make disciples of all nations through baptism. It is in Baptism that we become sons and daughters of God.
In the first reading, Isaiah speaks of the one to come who will bring justice to the world and be a light to the nations. Luke, too, in the Gospel, speaks of the one to come who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. In the second reading, Peter proclaims that is was Jesus whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and power.
