Jesus entrusted Peter with the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. When Jesus gave Peter the responsibility to build and lead his Church, he also gave him the authority to name successors to this authority. Today, let us give special thought to our Pope, Benedict, and pray for him as he carries on the challenging task of being the one whom Jesus has called to lead his Church.
In the first reading, we hear that God gave Eliakim authority over the House of David. In the Gospel, Jesus gives authority to Peter, as head of the Church. This happens after Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Son of the living God. In the reading from Paul, we are reminded that God is the ultimate authority over all things.
